Across the river from Sacramento, West Sacramento is a growing area that provides its residents suburban living close to downtown Sacramento. There are two main areas of West Sacramento, smaller older homes built 40-50 years ago and then many newer developments built within the past 15 years. The majority of the newer homes are loctated in Southport and Bridgeway Island. Newer commerical development in West Sacramento includes the regions only Ikea. Lowes, Home Depot and Walmart are newer additions to the city. Just how much new growth has impacted the city is that the population has increased 50% since 2000. With a total population in July 2008 of 47,511. Some parts of West Sacramento have recently undergone flood zone reclassification and while the levees are all undergoing upgrades mandated by the federal government some areas are now designated as special flood hazzard areas requiring flood insurance. West Sacramento is home to the Rivercats minor league baseball team.
